Home Science plays an important role in various domains such as Food Nutrition, Dietetics, Family Counselling, Interior Design, Extension Training, Adult Education, and within educational institutions, marking its significance in modern society. Over the past decade, Home Science has garnered substantial attention in India's educational landscape.

Defined as an applied and integrated science, Home Science aims to enhance the quality of life for individuals, families, and communities. This multifaceted discipline has evolved significantly since its inception in the early 20th century, encompassing a diverse array of subjects and attracting both male and female students.

The study of Home Science underscores humanistic values and addresses a wide spectrum of disciplines, ranging from chemistry and physiology to human development, fabric science, fashion, and fine art. It provides a platform for holistic learning and equips individuals with a comprehensive set of skills to contribute to societal advancement.

Aligned with NEP-2020 guidelines, our Home Science program at MGM University offers an 8-semester undergraduate degree program. Our student-centric approach integrates theoretical and practical components, allowing flexibility in subject selection and providing multiple exit options. Through a robust curriculum that emphasizes Discipline Specific Core subjects (DSCs), students have the opportunity to delve into Discipline Specific Electives (DSEs), Generic Electives (GE), Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC), Ability Enhancement Courses (AEC), and Value Added Courses (VAC).

Subjects such as Family & Child Welfare, Methods & Materials for Teaching Young Children, Child Psychology, Education Psychology, Children with special needs, and Guiding young child's growth, behaviour and development, are covered under this specialisation.

 

Supporting work of a child psychologist, family counsellor, or early childhood educator,supporting families and children in various stagesof developments.

 

Textile and clothing

In Clothing and Textiles students are offered courses in Indian Textiles & Costumes, Retailing & Merchandising of Textiles & Apparel, Computer aided Designing, Garment Manufacturing Technologies, Dyeing & Printing etc.

Acquiring knowledge of business concepts and practices relevant to the textile and apparel industry, and developing skills in entrepreneurship, branding, and product development.

Professional Development: Enhancing communication, presentation, and teamwork skills, and preparing for careers in various sectors of the textile and apparel industry, including design, production, merchandising, retailing, and marketing.

Food and nutrition

Human Nutrition, Public Health Nutrition, Community Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition, Diet Therapy & Nutrition Counselling, Food Chemistry, Food Hygiene & Sanitation, Food Analysis, Food Preservation, Food Standards & Quality Control and, 

Food Service Management.

 

 

A nutritionist, dietitian, or food scientist, helping make healthier food choices and manage dietary needs. Work in food research and development, quality assurance, or food processing industries, innovating new food products.

Extension and education

 

Role of extension in society. Designing, implementing, and assessing extension programs to meet the needs of target communities or audiences. Community Development: Concepts and practices related to community engagement, empowerment, and capacity-building for sustainable development public speaking,International and Cross-Cultural Perspective, Exploring extension models and practices from different countries and cultures, and understanding how cultural context shapes extension programs and outcomes.Under review Engage in community outreach programs, extension services, or social work, promoting health, nutrition, and sustainable living practices within communities.

Resource Management

 

Course content: Food Resource Management: Principles of meal planning, grocery shopping, food storage,inventory management, minimizing food waste, and promoting healthy eating habits within the family. Optimizing living spaces within the home for functionality, comfort, and aesthetic appeal, including interior design. 

Course outcome

Hospitality and Catering Management: Explore opportunities in hotel management, event planning, or catering services, managing hospitality operations and ensuring customer satisfaction.

 

 

 

Career Prospects: 

The students of Home Science get an opportunity to optimally utilise their creative talent through the professional elective in Interior Designing and Decoration. Students are offered courses on Traditional and Contemporary Interiors, Applied Crafts, Functional Interiors & Space Management, Computer aided Interior Designing, Scale Perspective Drawing, Ornamental Plants and Special Effects. It deals with economy and entrepreneurship development in students

Home Science education scope is widening day by day. Home Scientists have now not been limited to the five major fields only. They have been able to find their ways into various other related fields of importance. Aspiring Home Scientists are given the opportunity to specialise in Journalism & Mass Communication. For this student are offered courses in Radio & Television Journalism, Photojournalism and Advertisement, Public Relations & Social Marketing, Public Speaking, Computer Application for Journalism & Mass Communication, Training Methods in Extension, Educational Videography; Developmental Programmes for Social Change & Curriculum Design for Distance Education. Many career opportunities in food and nutrition i.e. Nutritionist, Dietician, Gym diet counsellor, Public health  counsellor, ICDS health supervisor, ICDS helper, Food inspector, Food Tester, Chef in hotels, Food analyst and Food counsellor in Army & police.
