Learn Physics for a Glorious Career

About Physics

Physics involves the study of natural phenomena observed in the world that surrounds us. As a fundamental scientific discipline, Physics helps us understand how the universe behaves. Specifically, physics deals with study of physical phenomena like the motion of matter and energy. At undergraduate level, teaching of physics includes subjects like mechanics, heat, light and other radiations, sound, electricity, magnetism, and the structure of atoms.

"Physics is the foundation of all science."

Whether you want to explore the mysteries of the antimatter, the development of sensor technology, laser technology, semiconductor technology, nanotechnology or to work with new energy sources, a degree in Physics from the School of Basic and Applied Sciences of MGM University will equip you with an edge through hands-on experiments in physics that you need for a career in Physics.

Course overview:

The Department of Physics at The School of Basic and Applied Sciences of MGM University offers the option of studying 3/4 Honors/Honors with research degree (B.Sc.) in Physics with multiple entry and multiple exit. Two year (4 semester) M.Sc. degree in Physics is also offered by MGM University.

The curriculum of B.Sc. Physics program includes major compulsory, minor, open elective skill enhancement courses (SEC), Vocational Enhancement Courses (VEC), Ability Enhancement Courses (AEC), Indian Knowledge System (IKS), Field Project (FP), On Job training (OJT), etc. with a total of 40-44 credits for each year (overall 120 to 132 for 3 years B.Sc., 160-176 credits for 4 years B.Sc. Honours/ Honours with Research). The students can choose minor from different disciplines of same faculty.

M.Sc. Physics program consist of Major Mandatory, Major Elective, Research Project, On Job Training/ Field Project and Research Methodology with Total Credits 80-88. The Department of Physics introduced new, competent, job leading courses on various technologies like Semiconductor Technology, Nanotechnology, Energy Storage and Devices and Biomedical Physics.

What this course will give you?

A Bachelor of Science degree in Physics (B.Sc. Physics) and Master of Science degree in Physics (M.Sc. Physics) will provide the students a strong foundation in the fundamental concepts, theories, and principles of physics. The student can gain following key elements of learnings from a B.Sc. Physics program:

  1. Comprehensive knowledge of core physics areas,
  2. Advanced mathematical skills,
  3. Extensive laboratory and experimental skills,
  4. Research experience,
  5. Analytical and problem-solving abilities,
  6. Preparation for future careers or post-graduate study.

This substantial scientific training prepares students for diverse career opportunities. Upon successful completion of 160-176 credits the students will be awarded a B.Sc. (Honors) degree in physics.

Why pursue B.Sc. Physics and M.Sc. Physics degree at MGM University?

The Department of Physics is located at 4th floor of the JNEC building. Facility equipped are the state-of-the-art labs, clean rooms, dark room, research labs, classrooms teaching with multimedia, smart whiteboards and other facilities.

The teaching programs towards degree courses B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Physics at The School of Basic and Applied sciences of MGM University have set a standard since the inception of the Department with the specialization courses like semiconductor technology, successfully preparing students for a high-tech career. Some of the key features are listed below:

  • Internationally Recognized Faculty – Personalized attention

At MGM, the students of physics learn scientific skills in small classes with intensive faculty-student interaction. The learning environment is conductive to preparing students for various scientific careers in academia, research institutions and industry.

The Faculty (Teacher) to Student ratio at physics department of SBAS is very good as limited number of students are admitting to this courses a benefit not every college running B.Sc. Physics and M.Sc. Physics program can offer. The advantage of small classes is that students can work closely with their Professor and receive personal, focused attention while performing experiments in labs as well as while doing the research. Most of the faculty is internationally recognized, holding doctoral degrees from distinguished Universities. The faculty members are active in research in the thrust areas of Magnetic Hyperthermia, Sensors, Energy Storage and Devices, Solar Energy etc. Students are encouraged to participate in various research activities, seminar, conferences, workshops etc. at National and International level. The academic environment is geared to preparing the students for real world scientific work, and providing a knowledge base to handle NET, SET and other competitive examinations also. Students are encouraged to publish their research work in scientific journals of National and International repute.

  • Teaching and Learning:

Teaching is delivered through lectures, laboratory practical sessions and problem solving tutorials. The tutorials are designed to deal with lecture based questions, on topics addressed in lectures, etc. Students usually spend extra over the time-tabled hours in reviewing the materials and completing coursework. A student has to spend at least 40 hour per week for their study.

  • Examination Pattern:

40 percent marks are reserved for theory examination and 60 percent for internal examination. Internal marks are based on continuous assessment throughout the semester which include internal class test, seminar, mini project, assignments, participation in activities, group discussion, etc.

Career Opportunities for Physics students:

Students who obtain a degree in Physics have a wide range of career opportunities available to them due to the versatile skill-set they develop.

1. Research and Development:

Physics Degree holders can work in recognized laboratories like BARC, NPL, TIFR, IISc, IITs, IISERs, ISRO, etc. as a research scientist. They will have opportunities there to contribute towards developing new technologies, new materials, and innovative applications.

2. Engineering:

Physics Degree holders can work in areas like aerospace, electrical, mechanical, thermal, nuclear, renewable energy, etc. They can utilize physics principles to design, develop, and test new products and systems.

3. Data Science and Analytics:

Physics Degree holders can work as data scientist, quantitative analyst, or computational scientist in various industries. They can use physics-based modeling, simulations, and data analysis for problem-solving.

4. Academia and Education:

Physics B.Sc. Degree holders can pursue post graduate studies (Master's or Ph.D.) and become a professor or researcher at a university. Teaching is a novel profession. A good teacher motivate and inspire the students to learn many things apart from the leaning curriculum. A teacher spends his life to shaping the career of the student thereby making and lasts impact on the lives of many students.

5. Scientific Consultancy:

Physics Degree holders can use their scientific expertise as a consultant to various industries, government agencies, or policy organizations as well as on technical and scientific matters, patent law, or regulatory compliance.
