Around 11,000 Books Donated as Part of MGM’s Book Donation Initiative

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Sept. 11: MGM University organised a series of initiatives to mark the 131st birth anniversary of Acharya Vinoba Bhave and the 75th anniversary of the Bhoodan Movement. As part of these initiatives, a grand book donation ceremony was organised at the Rukmini Auditorium under the theme ‘From Bhoodan to Book Donation... From Book Donation to Knowledge Donation!’ Around 11,000 books have been donated from across Maharashtra as part of the initiative. The programme was organised under the guidance of Chancellor Shri Ankushrao Kadam.

The programme was graced by renowned author Milind Bokil; Dr. Smita Raosaheb Deshmukh, Principal, Matoshri Vimalabai Deshmukh College, Amravati; Prof. Dr. Vilas Sapkal, Vice-Chancellor, MGM University; Dr. Ashish Gadekar, Registrar; Dr. Rekha Shelke, Dean; Dr. John Chelladurai, Dean; faculty members, students and other dignitaries.

After receiving a representative collection of books, renowned author Milind Bokil delivered a lecture on ‘Acharya Vinoba Bhave: A Modern Political Thinker’. This was followed by the inauguration of the Dnyandan Library at the Leonardo da Vinci School of Design in the presence of the dignitaries. The MGM Samvad issue, published by the students of the College of Communication, Culture and Media, was also released on the occasion.

Views expressed by the dignitaries

Milind Bokil

Acharya Vinoba Bhave believed in the idea of Sarvodaya, which envisioned the equal and holistic development of every individual. Through the Bhoodan Movement, he worked for 13 years to create widespread social awareness. The movement resulted in the donation of 4.765 million acres of land, of which 2.440 million acres were distributed. The concept of Gramdan emerged from the Bhoodan Movement, and 3,972 villages in India have adopted the Gramdan model.

Bhave's concept of self-governance envisioned Swarajya for every individual. His idea that “Swarajya means everyone's rule—my rule, her rule, your rule and the rule of all of us” presents a broader understanding of democracy. For governance, he proposed two important principles—‘Vichar Shasan’ (governance through ideas) and ‘Kartutva Vibhajan’ (division of responsibilities). He urged everyone to read Vinoba Bhave's Sarvodaya Vichar and Swarajya Shastra. Rather than thinking only of oneself, adopting the broader humanitarian perspective of ‘Jai Jagat’ and thinking about the welfare of the world is an important message of Vinoba's philosophy for the present times, he said.

Dr. Smita Deshmukh

Dr. Deshmukh said that the future of India rests on the shoulders of its youth and urged students to read books regularly to connect themselves with constructive and meaningful ideas. Since human beings connect with one another through language, dialogue and the exchange of ideas are essential. She called upon everyone to prepare a ‘blueprint’ of their responsibilities towards their family, society, state and nation.

The way one utilises one's leisure time plays an important role in shaping one's character and personality. Therefore, it is essential to develop oneself through reading, reflection and positive thinking. She described the book donation initiative as a source of light that would ignite the flame of knowledge and ideas in society and called it a commendable and inspiring effort.

Prof. Dr. Vilas Sapkal, Vice-Chancellor, MGM University

Prof. Dr. Sapkal urged students to devote regular time to reading in their daily lives. He suggested that students spend at least one hour a day reading and develop their own personal libraries. Reading develops the habit of reflection and contemplation, thereby enriching one's personality.

He said that great personalities such as Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam have shaped generations through their ideas and contributions. He encouraged students to read the thoughts and works of such great personalities.

Acharya Vinoba Bhave promoted social equality, rural development, non-violence and the philosophy of Sarvodaya through the Bhoodan Movement. Knowledge, social commitment and human welfare held an important place in his philosophy. Taking these ideas forward, the book donation initiative is being conducted under the theme ‘From Bhoodan to Book Donation... From Book Donation to Knowledge Donation!’

Through this initiative, efforts will be made to cultivate a love for reading among students while promoting the exchange of knowledge and a sense of social participation. The programme was organised with the broader objective of taking Acharya Vinoba Bhave's thoughts to the younger generation, developing a culture of reading and reflection among students, and fostering a culture of knowledge donation.

Students, teachers, staff members and citizens participated in the initiative in large numbers. Dr. John Chelladurai and Dr. Rekha Shelke, Deans, delivered the introductory remarks. Dr. Rihana Sayyed compered the programme, while Dr. Ravindra Deshmukh proposed the vote of thanks.
