What is Chemical Engineering?
It is a branch of engineering which works in the engineering of chemicals processes, technology development of and for new products and solving related technical difficulties. Chemical engineering combines the knowledge of Engineering with Chemistry so that that raw materials are converted into valuable products and related by-products by using ground-breaking technologies. Chemical engineers contribution to society is that they enhance the quality of day-to-day people’s lives and standard of living.
Chemical Engineer’s Role
The role of a chemical engineer generally include work in areas such as, design, invention, innovation of sustainable chemical processes and products, installation, procurement, construction, planning and operation of process plants and equipments, processing of agro and food products, fast moving consumer goods and cosmetics, mineral processing, atomic energy and reactors, safer working conditions in an industry and Research and development activities in all sectors described here. Many allied disciplines come under it, viz. petroleum refining renewable energy, biotechnology, nanotechnology, pharmaceuticals and mineral processing etc.
Chemical Engineering Jobs
The recent trend shows that in a post COVID situation, the Indian industry is about to evolve and grow. Many international companies are looking for setting up manufacturing facilities in India. As a result, job sector is going to boom chemical engineers in various sectors viz. fertilizers, food, petroleum, polymer, paper, fabrics, fiber, biomaterials, medicinal drugs, paints, lubricants and oils, polymer etc. Also, there are very good opportunities in Government and PSU sector companies such as Maharatna, Navratna and Miniratna. Many PSUs like SAIL, NTPC, ONGC, BPCL, HPCL and IOCL recruit through Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) score and offer competitive salary. Research & Development organizations such as ISRO, DRDO, NCL, NEERI, IIP, BARC, AERB contribute substantially in the growth of India and offer very good salary. Those who prefer office based jobs rather than shop floor in a factory; many multinational organizations have established their facilities in India and offering research, development and design consultancy services to their clients all around the world, from their offices in India.
In addition chemical engineers can appear for MPSC, UPSC, IES and IFS Exam and can also get recruited in various GoI ministries, such as Chemicals and Petrochemicals, Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization, Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board, Central pollution control board etc. Those who are interested in higher studies in India or abroad there are many opportunities in the area of chemical engineering research and can be opted as a career choice.
About Chemical Engineering program at JNEC, MGM University
JNEC, a conducted college of the MGM University (MGMU), is one of the reputed and elite engineering colleges in Maharashtra. Keeping in mind the scope of Chemical Engineering in current and future requirements of the chemical industry, MGMU has designed academic program based on both the theoretical and practical aspects of industry oriented studies and model curriculum prescribed by All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), Delhi. Chemical Engineering Department has well equipped laboratories required for necessary hands-on learning and has faculty members working on latest research areas. During the program, students develop the skills of analyzing and optimizing complex systems which make them ready to solve problems in almost any technical, business, or management area. The aim of chemical engineering department is to develop not only industry ready graduates but also entrepreneurs through innovations in chemical engineering. To promote innovation, MGMU has separate Entrepreneurship Development Cell to guide students and nurture their idea in setting up start-ups or small scale units.
Chemical Engineering Department offers Minor courses to train students in allied professional disciplines and has a student chapter of Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers, under which students get many opportunities to participate in professional technical activities. MGMU has specifically developed a state of the art facility “Innovation, Incubation and Research Centre” for students to have hands-on training in a multi-disciplinary project environment right from industry automation to drone technology, ADAS etc. To achieve holistic development of students, MGMU has many hobby clubs and also offers many open electives by different institutes right from Film Making, Fine Arts to many more. To know more about the Chemical Engineering Program, or to arrange a department visit, students and parents are welcome to call Dr. Sadanand Guhe, Head of Chemical Engineering Department on 9890717844.
