The Chemistry Laboratory is installed with modern analytical equipment and a chemical inventory spanning across the length and breadth of fundamental chemical research. The Chemistry Lab caters to the needs of students studying organic, inorganic and physical chemistry. Major experiments performed involve qualitative and quantitative analysis, compound purification, extraction and identification.
The Microbiology Laboratory focuses on life under the microscope. The Microbiology Lab houses instruments and auxiliary equipment required for the culturing, maintenance, observation and identification of microflora. Here, students learn and practice the essential techniques in microbiology, including media composition and sterilisation, staining procedures, microscopy, colony plating and antimicrobial activity
Genetic Engineering Lab
Genetics involves the study of genes and their effects. The Genetics Laboratory is involved in the study of gene function and its implication in cellular processes. The laboratory maintains state-of-the-art equipment for the study of genetic aberrations. Students are introduced to modern techniques such as chromosomal staining, gene silencing, mammalian cell culture and identifying genotype-phenotype relationships.
Molecular Biology Lab
Molecular Biology lies at the heart of biotechnology. Here, activities pertaining to genetic manipulation are demonstrated and performed. While most experiments are performed on simpler prokaryotes, some postgraduates and senior researchers work on complex eukaryotic systems. The major activities performed in this lab include demonstrations of gene function validation, vector cloning, gene amplification and expression.
The OMICS Laboratory is dedicated towards the demonstration and practice of techniques in genomics and proteomics. Major activities performed in the laboratory include the extraction, purification, isolation and sequencing of genes (genomics) and proteins (proteomics) of research interest. The laboratory employs new-age methods to improve the efficacy and accuracy of its sequences. Much of the work here is performed in collaboration with bioinformaticians, who are responsible for the accumulation and interpretation of raw data.
The Biochemistry Laboratory sees life as a sequence of chemical events. Major activities performed in this laboratory involve the identification and quantification of biomolecules including polysaccharides, amino acids, polynucleotides and proteins. Students are introduced to various assays that help understand the physical and chemical properties of these molecules, thereby complimenting the foundational theories of modern biology.
The Computer Science Laboratory lies at the forefront of interdisciplinary research. Armed with analytical resources, the Computer Lab works in tandem with the other laboratories, finding innovative solutions to problems in the analysis, storage, interpretation and presentation of generate data. This involves the application of programming languages (such as Python, JAVA, Perl and R) and software tools (Weka, SQL and BLAST) for the dissection of problems that can’t be solved with a test tube and a dropper
Plant Biotechnology Lab
The Plant Laboratory employs a modern approach towards horticultural and agricultural science. Students are introduced to various techniques including media composition and sterilisation, plant tissue culture, single cell culture and the introduction of desirable traits through gene manipulation. The techniques taught in this lab are an invaluable resource for students hoping to seek employment in the agricultural sector.
Satellite Physics Lab
To cultivate a sense of scientific curiosity, we have formed a close association with the Astronomy Centre, which houses several scientific curiosities including demonstration models, a hologram room, a planetarium, rocket models and informative posters. The Astronomy Club regularly conducts star-gazing and planetary observation events open to students of the Institute. These events help spark the flames of curiosity and develop a healthy scientific temperament.
The Cold Room represents the backend of our laboratories. Thermosensitive resources are stored in refrigerators that can maintain a temperature of -20o C, -40o C and -82o C. These include certain reagents and biological samples. Cold storage greatly prolongs the life of such resources and ensures their availability throughout the year. The Cold Room is also equipped with a liquid nitrogen dispensing system to provide a cold environment when an experiment demands it.
