Modernity has made us humans global beings. With artificial intelligence, supersonic transport and mega machines we are global in our strength and ability. In the words of Alfred North Whitehead, the worlds “arise and coalesce” in becoming an individual what s/he is today. Human life has gained ‘vishwaroop’.
Global living has also brought in a world of challenges. From personal deceit to ecological damage we witness in life ethical transgression at every front. In our craving for the best in the world, we appear to pursue a perilous path of civilization. Learned persons observe that there is a serious anomaly in the very fundamentals of modern human living that require immediate correction.
Having witnessed the early signs of the onslaught of modern science and industrial revolution across the Europe and its impact on human civilization, Mahatma Gandhi advocated an alternate way of living and demonstrated its successfulness. It was a neat blend of physical, intellectual and spiritual wellbeing; as Gandhi would say ‘harmony between word, thought and deed’. The world came to understand it latter as ‘sustainable’ life style. It is essentially a process of optimizing life to be in tune with the rest in great accord.
The Department of Gandhian Studies, having been inspired by Gandhiji’s approach to sustainability, offers wide range of academic research, studies and training, enables the students to visualize a just and equitable social order; equips them with 21st century capabilities and attitudinal efficiencies to construct a holistic human society (in the neighbourhood), and empowers them with ethical skills for running its systems with the spirit of inclusivity universal wellbeing.
We engage the students through a series of inter-disciplinary ‘learning by doing’ exercises, practicals and field actions, to understand the fundamental concepts and principles of life, and the ways of translating them to real life experience.
Reputed scholars, thinkers and activists from across the globe are brought to interact with the students so as to widen their horizon.
This four semester program is so designed, even those engaged in profession can effectively attend the program by just setting aside few hours every day.
