a soul which passes like a thread through the universe….

Sūtrātman

The luminous threads of Gandhi

A Dance-Music-Narrative with Multi-Media

As a tribute to the luminous soul and enlightened mind that showed us the path of peace and that illuminated our journey towards weaving the threads of compassion, forgiveness, truth, faith and divinity.

Sūtrātman meaning ‘a soul which passes like a thread through the universe’ is a humble attempt to explore and re-interpret the deeper meaning of thread (Sūtra) through narratives from Indian Cultural traditions and its innate power to ‘connect’, ‘inter-connect’ and ‘weave’ various entities; be it thoughts, faiths, inspirations, or the people. A hand-spun thread is not just a showcase of skill, but stands as a symbol of eternal continuity, cyclic journeys of existential experiences, and of our time-honoured faith system. When Mahatma Gandhi made Khadi (hand-spun hand-woven fabric) his mace to confront the invading forces, he essentially looked at the intrinsic value of a thread – supple, delicate, but with a potential to emerge as a vast integrated canvas of harmonious co-existence. Thoughts and ideologies like faith, peace, resolution, ‘bhakti’, austerity, courage, and collective consciousness seem to appear as threads – each in a different form and colour, and ultimately re-emerging as a fabric of eternity that initiates a journey ‘within’, a journey ‘together’ and a journey ‘beyond’ like a thread which passes through the universe. Such a soul walked this earth, this planet and touched many souls and like thread, wove their consciousness towards the path of light!

Sūtrātman was performed in 2019-20 as part of 150 years celebrations of Gandhiji at MGM, Nehru Center (Mumbai), Sangeet Natak Akademi & Culture Ministry.

This is the first performance of Mahagami Ensemble after 18 months. Please attend and share widely.

Greetings from MAHAGAMI GURUKUL
As you are aware, since the past 23 years, MAHAGAMI GURUKUL has been celebrating World Dance Day on 29 April – a day identified by UNESCO  and celebrated worldwide to disseminate the message of Dance Heritage. We at MAHAGAMI, had initiated a range of projects and programs aimed to celebrate dance, revel in the universality of this art form, and cross all political, cultural and ethnic barriers. Needless to say – the day aims to bring people together with a common language- dance.

This year, owing to the global crisis and the restrictions, we came up with a series of offerings that seek to bring joy in the tender minds and re-kindle their imagination. Published in 2016, the picture book narrative ‘Nritya-Gatha’ in its various versions – English, Marathi, Hindi and Bengali has been a valuable possession of many kids across the country and overseas too. During the lockdown in 2020, the book was translated into Malayalam and published by Kerala Government as part of their Children’s literature book collection. We are happy to share that the much-awaited Sanskrit version is ready to be shared with our readers which was recently translated by Dr. Ajay Nilangekar.

You are cordially invited to join the Digital Release of the Sanskrit version ‘कथा भारतीयनृत्यानाम्’ on 29 April 2021, 7 pm IST which will be LIVE streamed on Facebook page @MahagamiGurukul . We are honoured to have eminent poet-critic, bureaucrat and thinker Shri Ashok Vajpeyi and creative artist and philanthropist Arti Kirloskar as our guests for Book Release. Do attend this event Online which will also have short performances of our Kathak and Odissi students.
You are also requested to extend your blessings and wishes in our efforts to cheer-up the children who are going through turbulent times since a year of lockdown. MAHAGAMI team is distributing Khadi masks with illustrations of the book to children of various backgrounds; especially those in trouble or deprivation. We were able to successfully distribute close to 1200 masks in the past 3 days of our drive in orphanages, rural areas and hospitals. Let this World Dance Day bring the motivation in children to surpass monotony and embrace imagination. We will be happy to receive your support and contribution in this drive too. Also do visit our facebook page @mahagamigurukul to view video messages by our young dancers who share their inspirations and thoughts on Dance.
Wishing well-being to all

Invitaion | Vayam Digital Showcase | 17-18 Jan 2021 | 6 pm IST

Namo Namah
Greetings from MAHAGAMI GURUKUL.
May this new year 2021 bring peace, contentment and well-being of all and may our continuous circular journey of quest, search, discoveries and resolve find momentum and light! The year 2020 brought newer challenges, insights and a wealth of experiences … of coping with turbulent times, of continuous adaptations to the situations, of sharing concerns, of extending care and support to those in need, and of course of learning to value our cosmic ecosystem.
It gives me immense pleasure in sharing with you that our annual dance-offering VAYAM is being presented on 17-18 January 2021 6 pm IST through Digital Spaces of MAHAGAMI GURUKUL. Owing to the current restrictions, the 2-day Dance Festival will LIVE streamed both on Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/MahagamiGurukul and YouTube Channel www.youtube.com/c/MahagamiGurukulProgram from 6 pm IST. You are requested to kindly subscribe/like these Digital Spaces of MAHAGAMI GURUKUL and view the dance performances of our students and guest artists.
In this period of lockdown from mid-March 2020, we at MAHAGAMI looked at aesthetic and artistic adaptations of the time-honoured Guru-Shishya parampara and devised a method of teaching that could not just initiatie and guide the learners, but also stimulate their creative and intellectual process through discourses, dialogue and digital interfaces. While the Gurukul was closed for visitors and students, we kept the flame alive through a continuous sustained journey of creative work with our learners and co-artists. This edition of VAYAM showcases some of the compositions created recently and taught to the dancers Online. Since this year’s VAYAM mainly focuses on emerging dancers of MAHAGAMI who are our 2nd generation, we are happy to share that we are also presenting Ragini Maharaj (grand-daughter of Pandit Birju Maharaj), Preetisha Mohapatra  (grand-daughter of Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra) and Piyal Bhattacharya‘s short production of Marga-Natya in the festival.
You are welcome to join us as a ‘virtual rasika’ in our dance-offering and share the links widely through your own digital spaces.
Looking forward to your warm support and participation.
