MAHAGAMI… A co-sojourner in your journey of classical arts

Modern research has listed numerous benefits of learning a classical art form. It stimulates imagination, enhances problem-solving capacities, reduces stress and boosts self-esteem. Most importantly, it fills life with meaning. However, opportunities to learn a classical artform are not available to everyone. Not because they are not capable of learning or lack passion but simply because they come from economically backward regions and cannot relocate to the tier one cities of the country where most well-known art institutions are located. Realizing this unfortunate situation, Parwati Dutta, an internationally acclaimed artiste and Guru of Kathak and Odissi decided to take art beyond the confines of elite cities and class and thus came to be a unique Institute of classical arts, Mahagami Gurukul.
MAHAGAMI, Mahatma Gandhi Mission Sangeet Academy was established in 1996 in Aurangabad, a small town in the drought-prone region of Marathwada in Maharashtra state of India by Parwati Dutta in collaboration with Mahatma Gandhi Mission Trust. The aim of this establishment was to promote and disseminate the traditional Indian Art and facilitate research activities on them in the marginalized region of India. From a humble one-room learning center where Dutta stayed and trained her students in 1996 to be the only institute from Maharashtra to become member of the International Dance Council, UNESCO, MAHAGAMI has come a long way. It is the first ISO-certified arts organization in the world to successfully draft a Quality manual exclusively for arts and gurukul tradition of education.
Operating as a Gurukul of Indian classical dance and music, MAHAGAMI primarily provides training in Odissi, Kathak, Musicology and Indology and has trained over 2000 students in Kathak and Odissi in the past two and half decades besides producing quite a few teachers and researchers. Many of these disciples have transformed into artists performing across India and abroad. The center has also organized over 1000 art events involving some of the renowned artists and Gurus of our time and sensitized and educated over 1,00,000 people about classical arts from this region through its regular art awareness program, ANUBHUTI. The vibrant MAHAGAMI Campus constantly thrives with in-house ‘Baithaks’ and concerts of students and artists, workshops, seminars, festivals and performances of students and Gurus.
Joining hands with MGM University, a self-financed state university, in 2019, MAHAGAMI has started offering a number of University programs in classical arts. The programs are thoroughly researched and designed to suit the different levels of art enthusiasts.
