As journalism is all about spreading information and analysis about every relevant happening around the world, it becomes a career of great scope in this modern world. Along with the core facets of journalism viz. newspapers, radio and television, the emergence of new media has ultimately turned the tables of news broadcasting.
Subsequently, journalism of today is not merely a career option but an esteemed and one of the most prominent professions of the new age and ,yes, a challenging one. As progress of a nation depends upon its journalists where the key purpose of journalism is to educate, inform, interpret and uplift the people regarding different issues encircling the masses.
“A pen is mightier than the sword”, hence the most powerful weapon around the globe is always in the hands of the journalist, and no matter whoever is ruling the nation; a journalist will eternally remain in power!
The eligibility for pursuing a bachelor’s program in journalism is 10+2 certificate from a recognized board or college and for a post-graduation degree program you must have to your credit a graduate degree in journalism or any other stream from either a recognized university or college. But you should always bear in mind the fact that it’s not merely a degree or training which can yield a successful career in journalism, but you must imbibe the appetite of gathering each and every bit of information from all the possible sources and possess the capability of good writing skills, generate news stories in an accurate, precise and pleasant manner.
Journalism is broadly classified into two categories viz. Print Media and Electronic Media. Print Media incorporates newspapers, magazines, journals, periodicals, digests and news agencies while the Electronic Media consists of television, radio and New Media (Internet, Digital Platforms, Social Media, Websites, Portals and all sorts of Online Platforms.) With these categories comes the opportunities of broadcast journalism, fashion journalism, sports journalism, photo journalism, crime reporting, political reporting, travel and food, technical writing, visual communication, newspaper reporter, freelance writer, foreign correspondence, anchor, public relations, advertising, digital marketing, radio jockey, career in production houses and an ocean of other opportunities for a booming career in journalism.
A journalist is an island of curiosity surrounded by a sea of question marks, facts, figures, stats and information to be delivered. In addition to these, a journalist must provide justice to both sides of a coin, be confident enough to tackle with any kind of situation and most importantly should be analytical and structured while refining the relevant facts from the irrelevant ones. Hence, the essential qualities a budding journalist should foster within himself is an inquisitive and curious mind, strong presence, willpower and aptitude for presenting precise information, oral communication skills and effective writing ability. One must also have the ability to accept criticism with your head held high; the truth always sounds bitter! With these personal attributes you can steal the show as well as realize your ambition of a successful career in the media industry.
